It's day 2 of the Cacao Adventures with the Oompa Loompas! Today, we learned about the difficult process needed to create a bar of chocolate. The first step to creating chocolate is to harvest the cacao pods. After you harvest the pods, you need to crack it open and take out the seeds.
After you've taken out all the seeds, it's very important to ferment them. This step gives them the flavor, and depending on where it's grown and how it's handled, the taste can vary. Once the seeds are fermented (it takes about 10 days), it's time to dry them.
You're now ready to roast them, either by the power of the sun or by a roaster. The next step is where you crack open the seeds. Youll have to winnow the seeds, which is just a fancy word for seperating the dried skin from the actual cacao seeds. There're numerous ways to do this. After this, you'll have to conch it - or in other words, refine. You're pretty much just grinding it to gether. The final step to making chocolate is by tempering it. This is pretty much just heating up the chocolate to different temperatures so it can last longer as well as look and taste better.
Some jobs that work with chocolate include farming the cacao pods. Another is making the chocolate, and marketing and selling it.
